Finding great keywords is not a difficult task, but it does take some time and effort. Fortunately there are a wide variety of keyword research and analysis tools available to us to take most of the guesswork out of the process.
If you're still new to online marketing and blogging, you are probably trying to do as much as possible without spending any more money that is absolutely necessary. When it comes to doing keyword research, you will be happy to know that there are ways to get the job done without spending a dime. You will have to spend some time doing the research and the end result will still be pretty good, so let's get started. I will show you the free Google keyword tool first. That is where I start my keyword research and I recommend that you follow my example.

For this tutorial, I will be researching keywords to use for creating a website where I will be selling products in the desk lamps niche. Desk Lamps is a very broad category, so we need to narrow this down to a smaller, more targeted niche. As you can see below, I entered my broad keyword phrase into the search box. Just below that box, I have checked the box to:
Only show ideas closely related to my search terms
Then, just complete the Captcha and click the Search button. HINT: If you have a Google account, you should log in first so that you can receive additional keyword choices.
Once the search completes, you will be presented a list of keywords that people are typing into the Google search form on a regular basis. If you click on a column heading, it will sort the results for you in ascending order. Click on the Local Monthly Searches heading now so that the keywords with the most searches are at the top of the page.
Now we can look at results in the left hand column to find some keyword phrases that are getting a lot of monthly searches and that we can analyze further to see if we can expect to get them ranked high in the search engines. I will post more results below.
Let's look at some of the "long tailed keywords" that this search has given us. People are looking for these products:
led desk lamps, halogen desk lamp, desk magnifying lamp, tiffany desk lamp, swing arm desk lamp, glass desk lamp, gooseneck desk lamp, brass desk lamp, flourescent desk lamp, and banker desk lamp.
That's quite a long list of highly targeted products that people are not only looking to find, they are most likely looking to BUY. The more specific you get and the more targeted your niche is, the easier it will be to get your website or blog ranked highly in the search engines. I prefer to select keyword phrases that get a minimum of 1000 local monthly searches. Now that we have a good sized list of highly targeted keywords, let's download them as a CSV file (comma separated value).
To do this, check the box next to "Keywords" to select all of the keyword phrases. Now click the "Download" button, and select "CSV" from the drop-down menu. Now click the "Download" button and choose a location to save the file.
Analyzing Your Keywords
Initializing your list
Now you have your initial list of words and have tested their activity, it's time to determine the field and decide which terms will make it into your desired final keyword list.
I recommend creating a spreadsheet that will allow you to easily see each word's conversion rate, search volume and competition rate. These three figure rates allow you to calculate the possible terms for your site, and after that you can try and determine your focus on that keyword.
Now First, focus on your list of keywords and go through that list and highlight the terms that most closely target the subject and theme of your web site. These are the terms you want to hold. And erase all words that are not relevant to your site or content.
Create a mix of both broad and targeted keywords. You'll need both to rank well. Broad terms are important because they describe what your web site does; however, they won't increase the level of qualified traffic coming into your site.In a keyword list if your keyword is long(Long tail keyword) than that is good for your site because that decrease your site traffic and you can get rank easily.
To plan your highly focused keyword attack
So, you have your highly focused keywords. If you did your keyword research right, at least some of the words on your list already appear in your site content, but some of them may not. Start thinking about how many pages you will need to create to support these new words, and how and where your keyword phrases will be used.Make sure to naturally work the keywords into your content and avoid over-repetition that may be interpreted as spamming. Your content should never sound forced.
Your on-page content isn't the only place where you can insert keywords. Keywords should also be used in several other elements on your site:
- Title Tag
- Meta Description Tags
- Headings
- Alt text
- Anchor Text/ Navigational Links
You've spent a lot of time molding your keywords; make sure you use them in all the appropriate fields to get the maximum benefit.
